Abstract. The thermodynamic optimisation of one-dimensional cryogenic insulation systems where thermal conductivity depends upon temperature and other parameters has been studied. The following main different types have been considered for the general case of one-dimensional heat transfer (plate, hollow cylinder, and hollow sphere) and also for two-dimensional and three-dimensional heat transfer: (a) thermodynamic optimisation with a continuous variation of thermal flux along the insulation; (b) thermodynamic optimisation with a variation of thermal flux by finite steps along the insulation; (c) thermodynamic optimisation in two-layer or multilayer systems.
